“Because we cannot scrub our inner body we need to learn a few skills to help cleanse our tissues, organs, and mind. This is the art of Ayurveda.” ~ Sebastian Pole

The term Ayurveda is obtained from the conjunction of two words - ayur meaning life and veda meaning knowledge that means, Ayurveda is the knowledge of life or the science of life. The guiding principle of Ayurveda is that our mind influences our body. Our mind is extremely powerful and can create a higher state of health and freedom from sickness. The well-being and sound health of an individual are dependent on the equilibrium of 3 forces that control the 3 chakras of our body –

Physiological - strengthens the body processes

Physical - supports the functions of organs and body

Psychological - commands sentiments, thoughts, desires and actions.

The 3 forces are called tri-doshas, and are in a way a reflection of the celestial forces in a micro celestial human. They are in fact a reflection of the trinity - formation, conservation and demolition. These 3 forces, doshas or faults are called vata, pitta and kapha. They regulate the intricate functioning of our mind and body.

Vata – signifies AIR

It controls movement and comprehends all the phenomenon that come under the functioning of the central sympathetic nervous system. The body must have vata or motion which allows it to breathe, circulate blood, pass food through the digestive tract and send nerve impulses to and from the brain.

Pitta – signifies FIRE

It controls the metabolism with the help of bile. The body should have pitta which processes food, air and water through the entire system.

Kapha – signifies PHLEGM

It controls the structure and secondary formation of various preservation fluids. The body should have kapha to hold the cells together and form muscle, fat, bone and sinew.

If the 3 doshas are well balanced in the body, there will be absolute harmony and absence of all ailments. They keep the physique and psyche in a healthy condition. This, in a nutshell are the fundamentals of Ayurveda.
